E-nose Technology Enables Rapid, Non-Destructive Detection of Grain Pests

A new study published on arXiv highlights how electronic nose (e-nose) technology is emerging as a powerful tool for the early detection of pests in stored grains. By analyzing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by infested kernels, researchers demonstrated that e-noses can rapidly identify pest presence without damaging the grain, offering a breakthrough in post-harvest monitoring.

Unlike conventional sampling — which is often slow, labor-intensive, and requires destructive inspection — the e-nose provides:

  • High-precision monitoring of pest activity

  • Low operational cost, making it accessible for large-scale storage facilities

  • Real-time detection, allowing preventive actions before infestations spread

  • Improved food safety and quality control

According to the study, this technology could significantly enhance management strategies in silos, warehouses, and grain storage operations, helping reduce economic losses and supporting more sustainable post-harvest practices.

As global demand for reliable grain quality increases, digital sensing tools like e-noses are becoming essential allies for producers, cooperatives, and agribusiness companies seeking to modernize their monitoring systems.
